Eindhoven-based holiday company Vacansoleil has gone bust after building up large debts when the coronavirus pandemic saw demand for camping holidays plummet.

Most clients will be covered by the SGR guarantees and will get their money back, but the situation is different for people who booked through the Belgian arm, who may not be covered, the company said on its website.

The company said it is contacting people who are already away about what the bankruptcy means for them.

Vacansoleil, which claimed to be the European leader in camping holidays, has a workforce of some 300. Dutch staff will be paid via a salary guarantee scheme but no solution has yet been found for local hires in other countries.

The company was set up in 1969 and provides holidays for some 500,000 people in 22 countries every year.
