Laos warns of potential floods as tropical depression brings more rain

VIENTIANE, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- A tropical depression that has brought heavy downpours to Vietnam's central region has now weakened and entered Laos, bringing powerful wind and heavy rain in many provinces of the Southeast Asian country.

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology under the Lao Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on Tuesday issued a warning, advising people to be extra vigilant and wary of potential flooding, particularly in the central and southern provinces.

Many provinces of Laos will experience moderate to severe rainfall from Tuesday to Wednesday, and some will also be affected by the storm's powerful winds.

The weather bureau of Laos has warned that the Lao capital Vientiane, and provinces of Huaphan, Xieng Khuang, Luang Prabang, Xayaboury, Xaysomboun, Vientiane, Bolikhamxay, Khammuan, Savannakhet, Salavan, Champasak, Sekong, and Attapeu will experience heavy rainfall.

Everyone should be prepared for weather extremes and keep track of forecasts, the bureau has warned.

From the end of July to August, the central and northwestern provinces of Laos suffered heavy rainfall as rivers overflowed their banks. More than 6,000 households and over 11,300 hectares of land in 123 villages were affected in Khammuan province.
