The People's National Party (PNP) is calling for the Police Commissioner to immediately reverse the action taken against Corporal James.
Spokesman on National Security Peter Bunting says the PNP believes the move to interdict the Police Federation head is unjust, violates his constitutional rights, and sets a dangerous precedent that could have far-reaching implications for workers' rights and freedom of expression in Jamaica.
"Corporal Rohan James as the head of the Police Federation has not only the right but also the duty to advocate for the welfare and interests of his fellow police officers. Expressing concerns about the upholding of a court order should not be grounds for punitive action, but rather seen as a responsible act in the interests of justice," Mr. Bunting reasoned.
With Corporal James being the elected representative of the Police Federation's members, the opposition spokesman argued that it is within Mr. James' purview "to voice his concerns and demand the proper enforcement of the court order for the benefit of police officers".
The PNP added that the interdiction of Corporal James undermines the principle of collective bargaining since the Police Federation chairman plays a key role in securing fair working conditions, wages and benefits for rank and fike officers.
The party called for stakeholders to partner and work towards a more respectful environment for both law enforcement officers and the public they serve.
