The groomsman of a man who was brutally killed in his own home has been charged with murder.
Matthew Berry, 37, was found dead by his ex-partner at his home in Mt. Tamborine, Australia on Thursday last week.
Police have now charged his childhood friend Daniel Robert McJannett with murder.
Police will allege that McJannett killed Berry, a father-of-two, with a gym weight bar, the Courier Mail reports.
McJannett and Mr Berry had been friends since they were eight and McJannet was a groomsman for Berry at his wedding in 2021, court documents reveal.
McJannett has also been charged with possessing a large amount of cannabis that was taken from Mr Berry’s home.
Police say they have spoken to witnesses who spoke of Berry’s involvement in cannabis dealing.
Officers allege that Berry’s phone was found smashed but they managed to extract CCTV from it which showed McJannett at the property on the afternoon of the murder.
McJannett did not show up at court and his lawyer did not make a bail application.
The case was adjourned to Beenleigh Magistrates Court next Wednesday.
Speaking on Thursday, Detective Inspector Chris Knight, of Logan CIB, said: “The victim in this matter lost his life through an act of violence.
