Dominican Man in Antigua Faces $95,000 Debt and Prison Time for Marijuana and Cocaine Possession

A man from the Dominica now finds himself indebted to the state of Antigua for a sum totaling $95,000 due to the discovery of marijuana and cocaine in his residence.

On March 16, law enforcement officials executed a search warrant at Albert Baker’s residence in Bathlodge.

During the search, they uncovered two Ziplock bags containing cannabis hidden beneath the washbasin in the bathroom, as well as a package of cocaine positioned on top of a closet in one of the bedrooms.

Initially, Baker and his partner faced charges together; however, he decided to assume sole responsibility for possessing all the illicit substances.

The marijuana, weighing 500 grams, is estimated to be valued at $4,800 on the street, while the 1,059 grams of cocaine hold an estimated worth of $38,124.

During his recent appearance before Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh, Baker was fined $15,000 for the marijuana offense.

He was warned that failure to pay this amount would result in a one-year prison sentence.

Additionally, Baker is required to pay $80,000 for the cocaine, failing which he will serve an 18-month imprisonment term.

Both fines must be settled by the end of October; otherwise, Baker will be taken into custody to serve the sentences concurrently.

Once he completes his sentence, he will be transferred to immigration authorities for further processing.
