It's National Dog Adoption day today and Great British Bake Off winner Candice Brown wants people to know how 'straightforward and rewarding' the process is.

Candice adopted her dog Sybil and says the pooch has brought more happiness to her life than she "could have ever imagined".

As research from Pedigrees and Whiskers reveals that nearly half of Brits have concerns about pet adoption, Candice said: According to the research, more than a fifth of adults admitted that they wouldn’t consider rehoming a pet from an animal shelter, while four in 10 would only adopt a young cat or dog.

"I adopted my dog Sybil, and she has bought more joy to my life than I could ever have imagined. The process of adoption was simple and straightforward and it’s enhanced my life for the better.

“There are thousands of dogs that need loving, forever homes, but are held up in shelters because potential owners are preoccupied with worries of costs, time constraints and other things."

Candice points out that any pet is a big commitment regardless of whether it is adopted or bought from a breeder.

However she advises anyone who is looking for a new pet that "adoption from a shelter is the most rewarding way to go about it," before adding: "Adopt, don’t shop.”

Dr Tammie King, Applied Behaviour Technical Leader, Mars Petcare said: “It’s heart-breaking to think of the thousands of dogs and cats sat in shelters just waiting for their forever-home, simply because these misconceptions around shelter animals persist.

"Pets are given up for adoption for all sorts of reasons, so the idea that all shelter animals have behavioural or medical issues is incorrect."

Dr Tammie advised anyone thinking about adopting a pet should consider the spare time they have, who they live with, their financial situation and whether they have access to outside space.

As the current series of Bake Off is in full swing, fans will remember Candice won the show, which was then on the Beeb, in 2016.

But it wasn't only her baking which got her noticed on the series - her lipstick game was equally impressive and she wowed fans with a different shade each week.

The Londoner now has a huge following of 262,000 Instagram followers.

Since finding fame in the tent, Candice has released cookbooks, appeared at food festivals and had a range of presenting jobs.
