Vogue Williams admits near-death experience as a child still 'freaks her out' today

Vogue Williams has revealed that she had a near-death experience as a child, admitting that the memory still "freaks" her out to this day.

The TV personality opened up about the horrifying ordeal on her latest episode of her podcast with husband Spencer Matthews, after a fan asked the VIP couple to share a time in their lives when they "nearly died." It was at this point that Vogue, 37, said she'd almost drowned in a swimming pool after playing a dangerous unsupervised game as a child.

"It's a really weird story and it actually freaks me out when I think about it because I find it so worrying. I was once in a swimming pool and I was on my own and left to my own devices," she said. "I tied myself up with a dressing gown rope and threw myself into the pool to see if I could get out. Nobody else was there, I was only like 11, I wasn't thinking if you don't get out, you're dead."

If that wasn't disturbing enough, Vogue also admitted that she attempted the dangerous 'game' more than once. "I think I did it like three or four times," she said. "So I feel like that's the closest I came to death and someone was really looking out for me."

The story cleared shocked Spencer, who seemingly had never heard it before. "Are you mental?" he asked, before revealing that the closest he'd ever come to death was in a powerboat accident. The Made In Chelsea star first shared the tale on Loose Women in 2016, leaving panellists Katie Price and Coleen Nolan absolutely gobsmacked.

"[A friend] flipped the boat. I dislocated my shoulders and I thought I was sinking. I thought I was going to die.

"I was seeing a lot of colours, I was thinking about my brother and my mum because I thought that was it. As I said before, I like feeling that my brother is looking after me. I like to think that he saved me." Spencer lost his brother Michael in 1999 when he was just 10, after the 22-year-old went on a mission to become the youngest ever Brit to summit Everest. He disappeared on the treacherous journey however, and his body has never been found.

Back in 2020, Vogue revealed that she had enrolled her eldest child Theo in swimming lessons after having a "bit of a scary moment" around a pool.

"His confidence has grown with every lesson," she said. "I put him in a crash course and then he will start his regular lessons again come September. I also have zero tips as how I got him to wear the goggles, we’ve had them floating in the bath for months and he wouldn’t touch them before Monday!"
