SINGAPORE, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong called on Lianhe Zaobao, the flagship Chinese-language daily in Singapore, to provide objective and high-quality reporting while attending a gala dinner to mark the centennial celebrations of the media on Friday.
Noting that geopolitical tensions are rising and media outlets are accused of taking sides, Lee said that Zaobao should remain independent and objective in coverage and uphold its credibility.
Lee also encouraged the newspaper to rise to challenges in the digital era and affirmed the government's continuous support of Zaobao to ensure a trustworthy news source in the city-state.
Lee Huay Leng, Editor-in-Chief of Singapore's Chinese Media Group, noted that Zaobao is dedicated to engaging a wider group of Chinese-speaking readers in the world while speaking at the gala dinner.
Lianhe Zaobao was formed in 1983 through the merger of Nanyang Siang Pau and Sin Chew Jit Poh, which were founded in 1923 and 1929 respectively.
