Around 100 environmental activists were arrested during a protest against flying at Eindhoven airport on Saturday, police said.

The group, part of a larger demonstration by climate change campaigners, had cut through a fence at the airport and gathered on a grassy area close to where private jets are kept. Some left when ordered to do so by police but those who refused were picked up by police after around an hour.

The demonstration was organised by the Extinction Rebellion group who want the airport to scrap unnecessary flights, reduce noise and do more to combat pollution.

Several flights were either scrapped or moved, but no flights involving private aircraft had been planned for the afternoon, an airport spokesman told broadcaster NOS.
