Rodri and Aleks Zinchenko have added to Manchester City's injury problems.
The pair were in the starting XI for the 6-3 win over RB Leipzig in midweek, with Rodri coming off after an hour and Zinchenko playing the full 90 minutes. However, neither made the squad for the Premier League game with Southampton on Saturday as a result of the problems they have picked up.
They join defenders Aymeric Laporte and John Stones on the sidelines, who both returned from their time with the Spain and England national teams respectively carrying issues that have now ruled them out of two consecutive matches. Nathan Ake retains his spot in the starting lineup, playing on through the loss of his father in midweek.
Pep Guardiola admitted that the defensive situation is less than ideal with so many bodies missing, but reiterated the faith in Ake.
"Two centre-defenders injured, Rodri injured, Zinchenko," he said. "We are not in good condition at the back but Nathan is an exceptional person and he has our trust."
City will hope that their injury situation improves ahead of a crunch run of games beginning next weekend. Following a midweek Carabao Cup game at home to Wycombe, the Blues face two of their biggest challengers for the Premier League title in Chelsea and Liverpool away from home, with a trip to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League sandwiched between.
Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden were both named on the bench against Southampton after making their comebacks from injury in the midweek win over RB Leipzig.
